Hovel
Artist’s Statement
Shelter begins with the idea of structure as a humble form of architecture; simply made to provide refuge. Yet within that modesty is something more complex; a sense of comfort, familiarity, and belonging that transforms a simple structure into something that feels like home.
Hovel is a photographic documentation of a man and the shelter he has made for himself. The work becomes a record of the man who inhabits the space, where the objects, tools, materials, and markings scattered throughout the composition become extensions of his presence. Offering fragments of information about his mode of living.
